WEDDING
Jubilation!
a time of joy
and hearty celebration
gladness our hearts employ
but after the greetings fade
after the guests are gone
after the gifts are stored
life must go on
just you two now
with eyes for only the other
with courage to face what comes
and hope, the ills of life to cover
so stay true to the course
and never stray
hold fast to each other
come what may
for little things now
will loom large some day
the patterns now set
should bring joy not dismay
it’s easier to bend the twig
than to move the mighty oak
so mold the shape of life early
no need the fires of regret to stoke
if you choose wisely
and hold fast to that which is true
if you walk with courage together
your love will see you through
then when it’s just you two again
passion’s flames a thing of the past
you will reflect with thanks unbound
on the blessings of life that last
though brief your time together here
it is a prelude of what may be
if love has knit your hearts together
the path can lead to eternity
I wrote this poem to include on a wedding congratulations card we still use.
